10 Tips To Save Money

As we all know this economy can be very unforgiving, and you can never know too much when it comes to saving money.

Some say the number one American past time is baseball, if that’s true then money has got to be number two, or at least making money.  If making money is on the average Americans mind, than saving money must come next.  Here are 10 tips to save money on some common expenses.

  1. Gasoline, paying attention to details such as tire pressure, regular tune ups, and not driving aggressively are some of the best tips to save money on gas. Also planning your errands can significantly reduce the amount of fuel you might use, try to do several things at once like, stopping by the gas station, then pick up the kids, and on the way home get some groceries and by the way, pick up your prescriptions and drop off mail while your there.
  2. Reduce you television bill.  The average American is now watching an amazing seven hours of tv per day.  That’s right seven hours; the last thing we need is the tier 3 movie package when we can barely afford the electric bill.  Spend some of that money on a gym membership and improve your health, or just save the money and read a little more or go for a nice walk.  You will be surprised at what you come up with if you just try and be creative.
  3. Plan a nice home cooked meal.  For the price it costs to eat at the average full service restaurant, you can have a very nice, healthy home cooked meal for two or even three evenings.  Eating out is one of the largest unnecessary expenditures a family usually undertakes.  Not only is eating out expensive, you never know where your food is coming from, whether it been stored properly, or who’s handling it.
  4. Take care of your health.  This may not seem directly related to advice on saving money but I assure you it is.  Health care costs are growing at an astronomical rate.  Even though it may cost a little more now for healthier food and that gym membership, those expenses are absolutely dwarfed by the rising costs of pharmaceuticals and co pays.
  5. Buy quality used instead of new.  Especially now, there are super deals on near new items everyday.  People are in a tight spot when the economy is down and they need quick cash which means there’s a deal around every corner.  The internet is a great place to go to make deals, just make sure the person you’re dealing with is legitimate, and meet in a public place if the deal allows it and if necessary.  Even garage sales have great bargains if you’re willing to be patient and get up early for the best deals.
  6. Coupons. Boring I know, but after awhile, if your diligent, you will find more and more amazing places offering deals from half off eating out, to free DVDs with purchase of groceries, or great buy one get one free deals on stuff you were going to buy anyway.
  7. Upgrade your home.  I know buying stuff  doesn’t seem like the best way to save money, But if that stuff will for example, improve the efficiency of your air conditioner, or if replacing that fifteen year old fridge saves you 150.00 dollars a year than maybe spending money is great advice to save money.
  8. Replace that old car with a newer or more efficient car.  If your tight with money obviously buying a new or newer car may be out of the question, unless you take advantage of a program like cash for clunkers.  Maybe you can just sell your gas guzzling SUV and buy a small fuel efficient car and not loss any money
  9. Diy.  Do it yourselfers are saving a fortune.  Many people had no clue how to for example, paint a kitchen or tile a bathroom, but they were willing to learn and places like the home depot offer free workshops all of the time.
  10. Last but not least in our 10 tips to save money.  Save money.  This isn’t so much about saving money on things you spend money on but surprisingly it will save you   money.  Having at least an “emergency fund” in savings could save a ton of money.  Having to get a loan, or maxing out a high interest credit card will cost a lot of money if you have an emergency, and you can’t cover it in cash.  Having a buffer of around at least a thousand dollars will cover many emergency expenditures.

Saving money really isn’t that hard.  One trick is to track your spending for thirty days; you will be shocked to see where your money goes.  Sometimes just paying attention will keep you from spending money.  The best tips to save money are usually the most boring but effective.  Creating and sticking to a monthly budget will help enormously.  You will be more focused and goal oriented and ultimately you will have more money to spend on things you really want and not just random junk.
