Exploring the Reflexology Method

You may be asking yourself what is Reflexology? The obvious answer would be the study of reflexes and you would be correct, sort of.  The medical definition of Reflexology is that it is the study of reflex movement and processes but that isn’t the Reflexology that we will be discussing.  The Reflexology that we will discuss is actually a massage that targets specific areas of the feet to relieve stress and promote healing in the other areas of the body.

Reflexology targets specific pressure points mainly on the feet but it can be performed on the hands and even ears if necessary.  These points are connected throughout the body and when massaged they can relax and heal those corresponding areas.

Another healing factor for massages in general is that when the body is undergoing a massage, the brain releases endorphin hormones.  This hormone acts like a natural pain reliever and stress reducer.  Endorphins are also associated with feelings of relaxation and euphoria.

Most Reflexology treatments will be performed in a dimly lit room with soothing music playing and maybe some candles for their aromatherapy.  The client will typically sit in a chair with and place their bare feet in a small bath so that the feet can be cleaned before the massage begins.

The trained professional will then start to gently massage the feet making sure to hit the specific pressure points that will allow the healing and stress relief to take place.  Oils and lotions are usually used so that there isn’t any friction between the therapist’s hands and the client’s feet.

Reflexology is a relaxing and can even be a physically healing treatment that anyone can pamper themselves with.  Who knew that getting a foot rub would actually be good for our health not just a great way to alleviate some of life’s every day stress?
