Overcome Depression

Depression can be a very serious and sometimes even life threatening situation.  These are some general thoughts and suggestions on how to overcome depression.  First let us talk about what depression is then we will discuss how to work toward overcoming it.

Depression is often defined as prolonged sadness which is characterized by lack of general interest in daily activities, and interactivity in social function.  Long term depression can lead to even more severe symptoms that can lead to a more debilitating personal attack.  Many who are depressed often have feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, and fear.

There are several signs to look for in someone who is experiencing symptoms of depression.  Mood swings, lack of motivation, excessive sleeping, and poor eating habits just to name a few.  Let’s take a moment and look at a few causes of depression.  Often times it is a combination of several factors that ultimately lead one down the road of depression, for example, if one is working a full time job, and having difficulty paying bills in combination with the responsibility of taking care of a family, that can put extraordinary pressure on someone.  Sometimes the pressures of daily living can have a cumulative affect which, if not balanced with healthy activities may ultimately overwhelm someone to the point of depression.

Some of the more serious cases of depression have people trying to do anything they possibly can in order to squelch the emotional pain.  Often times heavy drinking, or smoking, and in more serious cases drug abuse, legal and illegal.  Others use less obvious destructive methods for attempting to avoid emotional pain such as, overeating, excessive television, movies, and computer time, and avoiding responsibility.

One of the more nefarious attributes of depression is its effects on us when we aren’t really aware we are even experiencing it.  Depression sometimes is caused by things we said we wanted but were not prepared for, like having children but not aware of the extraordinary time and responsibility required to take care of children.  Sometimes people experience a sense of loss of freedom.  An unhappy marriage,  in some studies,  can make you as many as 25 times as likely to experience depression.  Spending time with friends and family sounds wonderful, but if those friends and family are adding to your already stressful life in ways you may not be fully aware, then a problem may develop.

We have discussed what depression is, and some ways it can affect your life, now let’s talk of ways to overcome depression.

Living a balanced life is probably the best advice for an average case of depression.  Often times we work to hard, or to long, or even worse, at a job we hate.

Eating an improper diet leaves us feeling tired, ads to mood swings, and can affect sleeping patterns.

1.  Get plenty of quality sleep

2. exercise on a regular basis, studies have shown time and again exercise helps regulate mood, encourages proper sleep and produces natural endorphins that help regulate hundreds of different body functions.

3. Eating a healthful diet and drinking plenty of water everyday will help immensely in the fight to overcome depression.

4. Spend some time everyday in gratitude.  It may not be what you are feeling when you are depressed,  but  regular accounting of the things you have that you appreciate will help to develop your focus on more positive endeavors.

5. Spend time only with those who are going to lift you up,  there may be a period of time in which you limit time to only positive people so that you can begin to build your confidence.  In some cases you may not have too many uplifting friends, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your relationships and develop new friendships.

6. Keep some type of record of your episodes.  Keeping a log or a journal can prove invaluable over time.  The opportunity to recognize patterns is important.

In closing I would like to say that depression can destroy your life, but it absolutely doesn’t have to.  Take some time everyday for yourself, it is not only a good idea, it is an absolute necessity.  More often than not depression is just a stage one reaches with their emotional state after neglecting themselves for an extended period of time.  Just like the body begins to break down after extended neglect so does your mind, and your emotions.  It’s important to take care of your responsibilities, but you actually do a worse job over time if you continue to neglect your mental, physical, and emotional needs.  Focus on a few simple things everyday for yourself, and you will be shocked at the improvement.  Take care

the perfect post. Just like what you said. I have nothing to add. I’d like to elaborate a bit. This post is so well written it’s almost perfection itself. I feel that if a leave a comment it will stain the carpet and mess the overall grandeur of the blog. I beat a hasty retreat. But I come again to check how the author responds to commenters.
