Overcoming Depression Can Be Done
Overcoming depression has never been an easy task, especially considering the pressures with us in the modern age. Knowing how to overcome depression is a struggle in and of itself, and is not a task to be taken lightly. For those suffering from depression no one answer is going to satisfy, it takes time, patience, and consistent effort to make progress.
Depression is often compounded by stress from work, money struggles, and problems in relationships. So what can someone do when it is all most people can do to get out of bed and go to work, take care of kids and a spouse? Paying bills, handling chores, etc., is nearly impossible even for those not suffering from being depressed. To make matters worse, depression and anxiety are on the rise. Working long hours, the tough economy and marital strife are becoming common place.
There is no simple answer to the question of how to overcome depression but here are some basic areas that need to be addressed if one is to begin the process.
Take stock of your relationships- In trying times there may not be anything more important than friends and family. Having people that care about you around to help you through the struggles can make all the difference in the world. Of course relationships aren’t always beneficial and when taking stock, that also means minimizing time or eliminating all together time spent around negative or destructive people. Nothing keeps you down more than negative attitudes and those with no direction or goals.
Spend your time wisely- You may not get to do what you want as much as you would like, maybe you don’t like your job for example, but you can spend the time you do have poorly. Whatever free time you have needs to be maximized for healing. What do I mean? Instead of sitting at home watching hours of TV, your time would best be spent in healing activities. Spending your time outdoors for example playing sports or simply taking a walk will have a significant impact over time. Possibly even reading stories of victory of the mind and body, of those who have accomplished a great deal even when the odds where stacked against them.
Use your body to heal your mind- Staying active is of the utmost importance when you are depressed. One of the best ways to overcome depression is vigorous exercise. Study after study has shown that the brains neurochemistry can literally be altered by exercising on a regular basis and those benefits increase when the exercise is more aggressive. One of the last things you may want to do is get off the couch but possibly attaining the goal of losing weight or running a certain distance may motivate you beyond the couch.
Eat yourself well- We often forget the importance of eating a healthy diet; we especially may not feel like starting a healthy eating regimen when it is all we can do to get out of bed in the morning. This may be the best tactic of all to overcome depression and anxiety, not to mention a whole host of physiological and psychological maladies. Even relatively well people can fall into depressive states if they mistreat their bodies for long enough. I cannot stress enough the importance of eating healthfully when it comes to overcoming depression.
Last but not least- Work toward a specific goal. Many times the reason we get depressed in the first place is that it feels like we are going nowhere in life. If you are not accustomed to creating goals for yourself, then start small. As your confidence grows so will your ability to strive for new goals. Think of something you have always wanted to do and go for it. Take up a new instrument or take a class on rock climbing, cooking, knitting or whatever you have wanted to do but never allowed yourself. Think of this as a healing exercise and figure out how to make it happen, you deserve it.
I know not every case can be helped in these ways and that medicine may be required. One thing I do believe is that even in those cases, these ideas most likely will at least improve the situation if not cure it all together. Overcoming depression can be a battle but as with many of the hardest times in our lives, the greatest victories are often achieved and we are amazing human beings because of it.
