Do I Really Need Paintball Pants?
The short answer for this question is that it depends. Try sliding in jeans in a competition for example. Then you say well maybe I’ll buy baseball pants since I’m sliding everywhere. Try sliding in dirt that has rocks in it and you will soon find you need more protection. So what is the answer?
They make paintball pants for a reason. Does every type of game play require special paintball pants? If you are playing a casual game of woods-ball or if you are playing in some random field with a couple friends then maybe a simple pair of jeans would suffice. If though you are playing field play, competition, or any serious paintball then I you will quickly find how valuable special made pants are.
The pros
Weather you can only afford cheap paintball pants or you go all out you will quickly see the benefits to buying pants made specifically for the sport.
1. They are lightweight- when you’re playing a serious game every ounce counts. Being able to move in a nimble fashion can have a serious impact on game play.
2. Built for speed- everything about paintball pants says speed from the contoured shaping in the knees to the fit around the crotch and waist, the pants are built specifically for running.
3. Comfort- You will be sprinting often times in the hot sun. Your pants need to breath. Having good air flow is absolutely essential to playing a long hard day of serious paintball.
4. Protection- Key areas need protection when small hard balls are traveling at you at welt producing speeds, namely the family jewels. The knees are also important for padding as you will often shoot while kneeling.
The cons
1. Price- As with any sport or hobby, if you want to play you gotta to pay. Often our hobbies can cost a great deal of money but we usually know that going in and are ok with spending money on things we love to do. Pants aren’t always expensive though and many quality pants can be had for less than 50 dollars.
2. Specificity- You may end up having to buy specific pairs for specific game play. The more serious you are the more pants you will probably end up with. This of course won’t be a problem if you ever manage to get sponsored.
The good news is unless you are very serious about paintball you may not need to really purchase paintball pants. You could even wear shorts with some knee pads if you are not concerned with appearance. Paintball is like any other sport there is, there is basic fun all the way up to serious professionals who live the sport. Make sure you even want to continue to play before you spend to much money.
